I really like Anath's algorithm, the series of logical sequence and alternative choices 
for certain problems. I pretty much agree, but I've also found that lingering guilt may be 
displaced. I'm guilty about my mother's death may be an image-focus for a number of guilts 
that the client/protagonist still needs to own but doesn't yet--guilts about continuing 
self-defeating behaviors such as addiction patterns that continue! A little guilt (in 
optimal amounts) should be recognized as conscience, healthy self-regulation about the 
nature of human development, hypocrisy, self-deception, and that behaviors don't always 
match ideals.
     Another approach, perhaps later on, when a treatment alliance has been built, is to 
clarify the present life and check out for these discrepancies. (Elaine noted that the 
protagonist had some addiction problems! Do they continue??) (Remember Fritz Perls' saying 
that most people don't want to stop being neurotic, they just want to get better at it.)
      Atonement for guilt ideally involves relinquishing past attitudes (hate, greed, 
etc.) as well as continuing subtle and often disguised behaviors in the service of living 
in a more wholesome and aligned fashion. Then more throrough forgiveness becomes a more 
lasting process. In the case below, if our protagonist is still behaving in ways that are 
self-defeating or exploitative of others, the relief will be short-term and possibly 
misleading.
