Subject: friendship
On Friday, June 23 my local newpaper carried an article on the front page "Survey finds friendship, intimacy waning in U.S." It is an article by Ely Portillo (Knight Ridder /Tribune)
To quote: "American, who shocked pollsters in 1985 when they said they had only three close friends, today say they have just two. And the number who say they have no one to discuss important matters with has doubled to one in four, according to a nationwide survey to be released today." Other aspects of the survey say that demographically there is little difference between men, women, race, age or education. All numbers are down. And, family members are more likely to be the person identified as an intimate, but those are down also.

As sociometrists we can check in with what we believe is happening, whether or not e-mail connections account for some of fewer face to face support for people. Do y'all want to discuss this a bit?
