Dear Adam:
I briefly skimmed over your two pieces. As a part of your exploration of performance, I think it would be very instructive for you to check out Boal's book Rainbow of Desire in which he goes into such great detail even about the very formation of performance from the Greeks on. He is above all a master of the language of the theater and a theoretician in terms of how it works and the various aspects of the theater out of which eventualy came his Theater of the Oppressed and the book about it Published 1979 after he had been doing the work for some 30 years. Then out of all that came the Forum theater with all the techniques that he developed through the years most of which are detailed in Rainbow Of Desire.
Of course he very openly acknowledges how much Zerka's contact with hiim stimulated his desire to write Rainbow which was published in 1998. He even uses some Morenian terms. In fact, I really think that any serious student of and participant in theater and sociodrama must read Boal's work. It is the elephant in the livingroom so to speak in regard to the whole field even beyond Moreno when it comes to sociodrama. Boal is also a political player having been elected to many posts in Brazil and has begun to develop political drama in situ as a way of influencing the course of the passing and disolution of laws in the government. To telll you the truth, I was very dissappointed that he was not invited to speak at the International meeting in Brazil. I suppose there was some rational for his not being there. I just can't understand it.
Just some small change and perhaps some sense in this one
Blessings, Bud
