29th International Symposium on Social Work with Groups
Jersey City, New Jersey
June 28, 2007 - July 1, 2007
Groups: Gateways to Growth
A gateway is an opening, something that serves as an entrance or provides
access. A group can be a gateway, helping people experiencing stressful life
events or conditions move towards health, well-being, social inclusion, and
empowerment. This symposium will celebrate the ways in which groups
facilitate growth for people by opening gates, removing barriers, providing
resources, and providing safe spaces.  Come to the Garden State and share in
the rejuvenating power of groups with group workers from around the world.
As group work mentors serve as gateways for new professionals. Practitioners
and Educators are encouraged to present with a student.
Papers directly related to the theme are encou­raged but not required. Some
areas sought include:

·         Facilitating growth for vulnerable populations

·         Planting the seeds in group work education

·         Social justice: Opening doors and removing barriers through the
use of groups

·         Accessing and making sense of  best practices and evidence-based
research

·         Tending to the garden of diversity in group work practice

·         Opening connections with profes­sionals from other disciplines

·         Transitions from beginnings, middles and endings

·         Activities/ dance/ art/ drama/music as gateways to growth

·         The role of group work mentors serving as gateways for new group
workers

TYPES OF PRESENTATIONS
Papers are 45-minute didactic and discussion-orientation presentations.
Workshops are experiential and last up to 90 minutes.
