I talked with Paul Figueroa (ReDoTheatre.com) today, an ex-police officer who began w/ gang intervention, about his work and my fantasy to work w/ kids on peer issues in schools. He seemed very open to connecting.
Anyone in NW interested in the May 19th workshop? They need a few more people for it. He is teaching techniques to use with kids. If you check out his website: ReDoTheatre.com, you will see more about his work (and a brief workshop for teachers open to the public on May 3rd that is a go).
For those going to ASGPP interested in this subject, I took the workshop last ASGPP w/ Miriam Zachariah and Regina Moreno on anti-bullying and it was excellent. They are repeating this coming conference.

He's eight years old. He walks up the steps to his home, opens the door and goes inside. He hears yelling, lot's of yelling. Downstairs, he sees mom, standing with her hair disheveled and looks afraid. She's looking at her boyfriend. He has a gun. The young boy runs next door to the police officer and begs for help.
Imagine the boy sitting on the stoop waiting for what would happen next. It was from that point on I knew.
Years later, it's a warm day. A now Gang Unit Detective is working in one of the toughest areas the Department has to offer. He hears a call on the radio of shots being fired at a place of business. A boyfriend had hunted down his ex. The Detective is only a minute or two away. When he gets there he finds employees frazzled, shattered, terrified. The body is moved. He speaks to them softly, reassures them - looks into their eyes. They calm down and know they will be okay.
I knew doing something different was the right choice.
If only they'd taken one of our trainings.
