Hi Rebecca and Ed,
I have been reading the conversation about sociatry and the use of Morenian
methods with interest, as I do with many of the conversations. I sometimes
find it hard to work out how to join in "sensibly", but Rebecca you have
made a very open invitation that I can easily respond to, so here goes.
I am part of a small organization which uses Morenian methods as the central
organizing concept for our work. We work with individuals and teams in
organizations to assist them to create meaningful and satisfying work for
themselves. The contexts of the work we do includes everything from team
development or resolving conflict to developing a bigger picture about
leadership or career development for individuals.
The whole premise of what we do is Sociatry. We use Morenian principles and
methodology from the outset, working with people to identify what it is they
are seeking to grow in themselves and/or their organizations and then using
group work and one to one sessions to achieve the outcomes that have been
negotiated. Its hard to say what we do is specifically psychodrama or
sociometry or sociodrama or role training. It's a mixture of all of them.
We contract to achieve something and then work with warm-up and the method
to assist people to gain the outcomes they are seeking.
Our intent from the start was to work in organizations using "the method",
as sociatry is for all, not just the therapeutic world; and boy, does this
method work! We struggled initially to work out how to present what we do
in a coherent way, so we took a step back and looked at it all from a bigger
picture perspective. We settled on a systems thinking framework as a means
of encompassing Morenian theory, principles and action methodologies.
This way of looking at the method is now part of my everyday thinking so I
sometimes find myself wondering about the arbitrariness of separating out
psychodrama from sociodrama from sociometry etc, etc, etc. of course they
are different aspects of the method but to me they are all part of a
wonderful "whole" that is ALL sociatry. This leads me to believe that
whenever we are using this method: with one person, with a crowd, in a
therapeutic setting or in a corporate office.. it's ALL sociatry, and we
each of us are doing our bit of a much larger whole (including much more
than Morenian methods) to heal society.
So that's my sharing...
cheers
Grace

I am very curious about where and how folks are using psychodrama and
sociometry outside the psychotherapeutic/recovery world. Not theoretically,
but actually doing it....
Any one care to share?
