RE: Crime Area MapDear Jean--I can double some of what you said. I chose not to go to the site for several reasons. I experienced a slight anxious pinch when reading the email, similar to seeing the violent headlines in a newspaper or hearing about violence on the news. I don't regularly read newspapers or watch t.v. news for this reason. I was also aware of a morbid curiosity about who might be pedophiles in the world. And I work with chronically ill men who spent years incarcerated in state mental hospital after being found "not-criminally responsible" for sexual abuse and murder when psychotic. They are now stabilized, live in assisted housing, take meds as prescribed, and have supportive staff to give them structure throughout the day and night. They do not pose a threat to the community and I am not afraid knowing that some of them live a mile from my house.
Of course, I also do not have children at home. However, I do have grandchildren nearby and I shall make certain that they are educated at appropriate times and with sensitivity about "safe touch," about what to be aware of , and what to do if someone were to approach them, etc. etc. I'm not certain that going to a site to I.d. nearby pedophiles will necessarily keep them any safer. But I do understand that the intent behind such sites is to increase safety for a community.
Thanks for mentioning this as I too was wondering about others' responses. Patti

I may be over reacting to this posting, but I am disturbed by the fear-based behaviour suggested here. Do I or my children need to be afraid of our neighbours? What roles am I warming up to if I go the website? Am I the only group talker feeling disturbed here? Is Melbourne so far from civilisation that I don't understand the realities of life? Is there a symbol for irony? I am being somewhat serious here.
Cheers
Jean

Crime Area Map
I wanted to share a website with you that is a good idea to visit. It is
www.familywatchdog. us When you visit this site you can enter your address and
a map will pop up with your house as the small icon of a house and red, blue,
green, dots surrounding your entire neighborhood.
When you click on these dots a picture of a person will appear with an address
and the description of the crime he or she had committed. I was really shocked
at how many of these people were in my neighborhood. The best thing
is that you can show your children pictures and see how close these people
live to your home or school. This site was developed by John Walsh from
Americas Most Wanted. Another tool to help us keep our kids safe.
Please pass on to anyone who has families!
This note was sent to me by Art therapy colleagues.
