Veterans, trauma, etc.

Thanks, Ann.

(I'm just cleaning out old e-mails). I do remember Joe now. I believe he
won an ASGPP award some years ago. I remember learning about his
program, being fascinated and wanting to write something up for PNN,
which did not come to pass.

I hope that something will be written up by him and/or others who work
with veterans. As servicepeople return from the war, we will have
incredible need for these services. We have a mental health crisis in
the making -- that can be averted if we can mobilize as healers.

Always good to have another resource. Joseph Duehl,LCSW, TEP and
recipient of Zerka T. Moreno award directed a PTSD unit at the VA
medical Center in Salem, VA for over 15 years, and often presented at
ASGPP and other conferences. The unit's program featured a residential
treatment approach with a ropes course for cohesion/trust building,
daily psychodrama and a trip to war memorials in DC. I always wished
they would write it up but they have always been hard at work with vets.

Just hosted a psychologist, Ed Tick, Ph.D., who is doing some
very leading-edge work with veterans, especially using story telling,
Native American ritual, sociodrama, depth psychology, and other
experiential methods. He is from Albany, N.Y., and trained briefly at
Beacon many years ago. His program here was very fruitful here with
veterans and their families, and although I think I know a lot about
trauma, I learned more about the veteran and war experience and how it
is different than what we think of as typical trauma and how we treat
it.

He was interested in current advances in psychodrama, and I
described to him information about the Therapeutic Spiral Model, the
model's Containing Double intervention, and other psychodramatic
advances.

He would make a great keynote speaker for regionalized programs
and conferences. I know it is too late for the April conference, but I
highly suggest that ASGPP and psychodramatists in general connect with
him.

	His site is www.mentorthesoul.com.

He is working to create safe return programs across the U.S. for
returning service people; see www.soldiersheart.net.

His book is "War and the Soul: Healing Our Nation's Veterans
from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder."
