Dear People:
I have been working with autism issues for nearly 50 years beginning when I was 19 with Bruno Bettelheim. I am also the social worker who is responsible for the evaluationsof the 40 autistic children in our program here in a public school in Brooklyn as well as assisting their parents in coping with and working towards the improvement of their childrens conditions and planning for their future.
Role training where possible can be quite helpful once a child or adult has proceeded beyond the use of ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis)

Most importantly, before or at least along with any attempts to institute ABA, role training, or any other psychotherapeutic treatments other than social awareness training similar to what Dr. Temple Grandin, one of the most successful Adult autistic persons alive today, speaks of in her books, the most important information that anyone themselves or for their children with any degree of autism should know about are the following: ( also flourescent lights can be quite troubling to many persons diagnosed with any degree of autism.) Be well, Bud Weiss

AUTISTIC CHILDREN: www.iahp.org The Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential has some good experience with these children, however, it is essential that the Biomedical approach be pursued wherever possible as can be seen in the following sites.
The following http://www.autismwebsite.com/ARI/index.htm is the main web site for the Autism Research Institute (ARI) You can watch the videos of autistic children who have gone through the protocols and have been able to achieve remission of all or nearly all symptoms available here: http://www.danwebcast.com
You can obtain the protocols for your child Through the ARI when you have filled out and sent in their diagnostic questionnaire available on the following site
http://www.autismwebsite.com/ARI/intro/e23.htm at the bottom of the page. You will need to have PDF installed on your computer which is provided usually with most computers and is available for free download at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Go over the Autism Research materials thoroughly. They apply to children with severe ADD or ADHD who have been so stirred up since they were infants. Usually they have gotten worse around age 2 when they have received the large number of vaccinations which can be poorly tolerated by many children and lead in many instances to so called “ear Infections,” which are really just inflammations responding to the vaccinations. Dr. Michael Schmidt’s book Healing Childhood Ear Infections goes into this and speaks specifically about the damage caused by the over use of antibiotics and the importance of supplementing with some form of probiotic to replace the good intestinal bacteria which have been depleted by the use of antibiotics. Those friendly bacteria called probiotics (for life) do more than 20 things to support your immune function.

Supplemental Needs Trusts, Wills and Guardianship Arrangements
If your child is significantly disabled or retarded or autistic, it is very important to ascertain whether that child is eligible to be receiving money from any government program such as Medicaid or the Supplemental Security Income Program (SSI). If a person's child is receiving Medicaid or SSI a bequest in a Last Will and Testament to that child may eliminate the Medicaid or SSI benefits for that child until they are used up.
However, if the parent of that disabled or retarded child creates a Supplemental Needs Trust then the child will still be able to receive Medicaid or SSI or other government means tested benefit and still retain the benefit of the Supplemental Needs Trust. Federal legislation passed in 1993 and various implementing state statutes established for the first time the ability for a parent to create a Supplemental Needs Trust for their child who has a disability.
These Supplemental Needs Trusts can provide benefits without affecting eligibility for government benefits such as Medicaid or SSI or other governmental benefit program. In essence these Supplemental Needs Trusts provide for the provision of funds to the disabled or retarded child that will supplement but do not replace any government benefits.
THE FOLLOWING AGENCIES WILL PROVIDE FREE GUIDANCE BOTH FOR OBTAINING THE ABOVE AND ADVISING ABOUT GURADIANSHIPS AND WILL ARRANGEMENTS.
  1) Laurie Stride Legal Dept of the Association for the Help of Retarded Citizens: 212-780-2586.

  2) Also check with AHRP about home health aides
and respit possibilities. Often with seriously delayed children, it
is possible to get someone coming in 5 days a week for 4 hours a
day to give you a chance to do some things you need to do and to
give you some time to yourself as well.

  2) New York Lawyers for the Public Interest
  Ms. Paola 212-244-4664
They will assist in preparing proper guardianship and trust arrangements for no cost in New York state and may be able to link you up with a similar group anywhere in the US.

Recently a psychologist I know asked if psychodrama might be useful for an adult man with aspergers who has recently become aware that he doesn't feel things deeply in the same way others do. Do any of you have experience with using psychodrama with adult's with aspergers and if so, what are your thoughts on this,
