Hi Erica,
I wonder what stirred upthis Q?
Is self expressiom therapeutic ?! And for whom?
True, I agree with your late husband,every one wants to be 
seen,heard,validated etc,but is it therapeutic?
As far as I am concerned as long as what is expresed is expressed with the 
awareness that it is true and useful -it has a potential to be if not 
therapeutic,at least not  harmful.
I don't think psychodrama or therapy promotes self expression,rather self 
knowledge. What to do with  that knowledge and how to express it  =that is a 
differrent issue.And perhaps an art.
As for the brain: it would be interesting to see whether there is diffrrent 
electrical activity,when an actor expresses herself in a role,vs gives 
expression to her own truth? differrent centers activated ?!
