I am also glad that this discussion is taking place. My memory of the Pocono conference was that it was a gathering of the tribe...a time to connect and reconnect, and less a time to promote psychodrama. It was, for me, one of the more memorable conferences partially because of the size. I had been out of the swing of things for a few years, raising, children, and it was a lovely way to reconnect. My needs at that time were different than they are now. Why not poll the membership and see what their needs are at this time? Dale, your ways of determining the success of a conference are very useful. I would hate for how much money we made to be the only criteria (although I realize it is an important one).
I am concerned about the average age of the conference goer. When I first began attending conferences there were tons of students. Now there are far fewer. This is not good for our profession. I do a lot of in services on psychodrama. Here, half an hour away from Beacon and an hour and a half from NYC, people under the age of 40 rarely have even heard of it. Anything to get students in would be a good thing.
When we talk about holding it at a college it would likely have to be at the end of May or beginning of June because that is when dorms are empty and classrooms are available.
It makes me wonder, why do all conferences need to be the same, to fill the same need? Maybe it is time to look at varying them a bit. For years they were always in NYC, and now they take place all over. Why not have one every few years that is held somewhere other than a major hotel?
And my last thought is,,,,if the conference in Miami was so successful, let's have it there again! Soon. It was terrific indeed.

It's great to hear the dialogue. One of the issues to consider is that in April most universities are in session and that would severely limit the number of group rooms that would be available. One of the things I value most about the annual meeting is the diversity and number of workshop presentations. I'd hate to lose that aspect. Linda Condon
