Losing the war of ideas....Sociogram

Dear Tom, I email to you in your role as somewhat expert at sociometry.
The map you sent seems to be not sociometry per se, but a quasi-sociometry.
Military intelligence has charted the relationships among 40 or more identifiable
insurgents, based presumably on information derived from news, informants, confessions of
suspects (of questionable veracity if coerced?), statements made by these folks alluding
to others, etc. It seems to be an attempt to identify who "influences" whom.
The tele among these folks is completely inferred by calling it a sociogram. It
could well be that some of these influences operate as contrasts---i.e., A is influenced
in the sense that he hates B, and wants to do things differently---hardly tele. Or A gets
money from B, but doesn't know or like B.
All kinds of other interpretations could be brought to bear.

So perhaps we should be wary of pseudo-sociometry and not assume that folks out there
are sympathetic to the whole idea.

         Warmly, Adam
