Dear Deborah,
Welcome to Grouptalk. Thanks for speaking up for psychodrama!!
How did you learn about it?
To build on what you reported, a couple of things:
It's interesting that even the use of a psychodramatic technique is interpreted by some of your fellow students as psychodrama itself. That's like seeing a nurse in the Amazon give a shot of an antibiotic and say, "I've seen medicine done."
The part I want to comment on is your saying that psychodrama is part of an entire philosophy. Not disagreeing with you at all, but I would say something like "Psychodrama is only one component in a goodly number of ideas involving psychology, sociology, philosophy, and techniques that are subtle, sometimes complex, and have many applications in not only psychotherapy but also in many aspects of culture.
Anyway, your comments were fine, and I appreciate your speaking up! It illustrates the point that there is a need to develop a kind of succinct summary that might interest our colleagues.
By the way, a bit of "netiquette." I almost erased your email before I opened it because there was no "subject line"--- so maybe it was spam. Please put something up the in Subject:.. like Psychodrama.
Second, where in the country / world are you? That would also help. Do you know any psychodrama trainers or practitioners? Would you like to network with others with similar thoughts? Let us know. Might you even come to our national conference?
Good wishes! Warmly, adam blatner (p.s. please let your class know they can go to my website to access easily many papers about psychodrama, book lists, and so forth.) www.blatner.com/adam/

Hi,
I wanted to share with the listserve readers that I have begun my contributions to our Moreanian-influenced world by speaking up in a class I have as I pursue a social work degree. In this practicum class someone said they used psychodrama to facilitate their group of teens. Psychodrama in this case was use of the empty chair technique and some sharing by group members. Someone else acknowleged that he had seen it done and thought Psychodrama was a great "thing".
I asked the professor for permission to inform the class about psychodrama so that they would have a better idea of what it was because it was one part of an entire philosophy developed by JL Moreno and we, as social workers should know about this. I started by saying that Moreno's philosophy stated that: "A truly therapeutic procedure cannot have less an objective than the whole of mankind."
went on to sociatry, Group Psychotherapy, sociodrama and psychodrama and of course sociometry. Did the best I could trying not to overwhelm with passion or substance.
I have no idea if anyone who expressed interest will follow up but... I'm putting it out there.
