2008 ASGPP Writers Workshop

Hi Ed and all, there's another trick:
    1. Find a colleague who has written or has been on the consulting ed committee or
who's willing to play the following game with you. Maybe even some of the editors will do
this and then recuse themselves in the formal editorial process.
      2. Send tentative drafts and have the friend say, this is relevant, this is
irrelevant, we need more of this, less of that, cut this... not a fine read or proofread,
but a general feedback.
Might this dialog-encounter dynamic be encouraging to many?

About the idea of "rejection," I wonder how actually true that is.
I am aware of returning papers for revision and the author was too distracted,
lazy, entitled and indignant, I don't know why, to bother doing it. But the papers really
needed revision---in the form they were in, I'd be embarrassed to have it presented to a
group of non-credulous (i.e. whatever you give me I'll think is swell) colleagues.

That's an interesting criterion I use, by the way: I ask myself, "If this
presentation were given to a class or audience of neutral, a tiny bit skeptical, yet
really quite open professional colleagues; and if I were known to this audience for having
invited this presenter to make this presentation, would I feel humiliated?"

Anyway, let's not imagine the editors to be sitting there with a "show me"
superior attitude. It's not that way. It's usually closer to: "How can I encourage you?
You've got some good ideas but they need work. Here are some relatively specific
suggestions."

What do y'all think about my best estimate of the situation?

This is especially relevant also if we are to get a fresh start with a new publisher.
                           Warmly, Adam
