Just off the presses!

Landy, Robert J. (2007). The couch and the stage: integrating words and action in psychotherapy. Lanham, MD: Jason Aronson/ Rowman & Littlefield. www.rewmanlittlefield.com 1-800-462-6420

Addresses the scope of action in therapy, and though there's some emphasis given to psychodrama and drama therapy, the author also considers the contributions of those psychoanalysts who used action in certain ways; Fritz Perls; Henry Murray's use of behavioral rehearsal as well as later behaviorists; bioenergetic analysis; Kelly & fixed role therapy; play therapists, and others. Nina Garcia conducted a psychodrama and its transcript is included, and the author discusses his own role method and its underlying theory. Another section includes a description of David Read Johnson's "Developmental Transformations."
The book addresses some of the shared assumptions and goals of the action psychotherapies, and weaves these together with other developments in neuroscience, other case examples, and notes a number of widely used techniques. The book has over twelve pages of references and stands as one of the more important contributions in the field!
