As I just read the entire article on Political Sociometry, from which Ed quotes, here is an impression, and question:
JL's main thesis: the sociodynamic effect (imbalance betw. the overchosen and underchosen...where the sociometric rich get richer) is always present in underlying social matrix, whatever the visible social structure, in all human groupings. Even in socialist revolutions, the sociometric rich got richer and the sociometric poor got poorer, even though efforts were made for economic equality. Economic imbalance is a reflection of, or aspect of, the sociodynamic effect, and not the other way around. One can equal the playing field economically and not heal social injustice.
He calls repeatedly for..."small sociometric revolutions".
What I kept asking as I read is, "How?" He describes some methods...sociometry and sociodrama; increasing sociometric consciousness; work with social atoms; isolate...
"the 'social' micro-organisms in the social structure, facilitated by sociograms, sociomatrices, and interaction and movement diagrams. Remedies against social syndromes as the capitalistic syndrome, will be found along lines Marx never dreamed of, less violent and more permanent in their effects."
I understand how the underlying structure and sociometric consciousness emerges w/ sociometry....I am not so clear how one intervenes in it, ie, what are the "remedies"? Just revealing sociometric structure, although it changes the sociometry in some ways, does not, in my experience, correct the imbalances. Do "stars" automatically have a social consciousness to share the sociometric wealth? Not necessarily. And not in any group of which I have been a part where there was sociometric work. If the sociometrist is "neutral", as he says, where are the values to intervene in this universal dynamic, when there is also, he states, "deep resistance" to change coming from this underlying sociodynamic effect?
Seems there needs to be sociometric interventions, besides making the socimetric unconscious, conscious. Seems there's a need for a theoretical orientation for intervention for these techniques of sociatry, as there are theoretical orientations for intervention in psychotherapy with techniques of psychodrama.
