Looking for Innovators...

Dear Ed and Adam,
Thanks for the shout out for the International Class, Adam! Ed, I agree with
you that Marxism does not work. Many aspects of Marx have failed.

I do however, think as with a lot of methods, there are SOME things about
Marx that are extremely useful. Have you ever considered postmodern marxism?
Dialectics is certainly one of the most important aspects of social
therapy--in that it is about dialogue, activity, and people being impacted on
by others arguments. Isn't that what we strive for--to impact each other in
such a way that we can have peaceful and giving relationships, communities,
and worlds with a diversity and dynamism of different world views?
I hope so.... I don't want a world where everyone thinks and looks like me--I
rather like a good dialogue/activity with differing views. The creative
challenge is what makes life worth living!

Also, I welcome anyone to sit in on a conversation the International Class is
having...to see how these remarkable individuals from different places create
something together.

I hope to hear from you,
Melissa

This is not what I am talking about, although this is, for sure, one response
to the world situation. "The International Class" is a part of the Institute
for Social Therapy, a Marxist Based Therapy. I do not hold to a marxist
perspective, and agree with Moreno's critique of marxism in Sociometry,
Experimental Method and the Science of Society. His critique is the most
accurate I know of about why it (marxism) does not work (although
Moreno called Marx one of the most significant pre-sociometry social
scientists. Moreno also described Walt Whitman the same.

What do participants say? "For the last eight years, I have studied
welfare policy and have been an advocate for more humane services in New York
City. I applied to The International Class out of a recognition that my
understanding of poverty was limited - and in some ways, provincial. My
colleagues taught me about anti-poverty programs around the world, which
helped to broaden my understanding. We also worked as a class to find new ways
of handling the financial struggles of individual class members collectively -
and took seriously what was needed - including money - to make it possible for
this diverse grouping of people to learn together. As an American and an
anti-poverty advocate, this experience has been invaluable."
	-- Rebecca Widom

"Being a member of The International Class has given me an broader
perspective on education and youth development, and I have come to see my work
in a global context. I am able to share the experiences of my international
classmates in Africa, India, Asia and South America -- colleagues who have
vastly less resources to work with, face far greater obstacles, and, yet, have
continued to be innovative and to give. I've learned that we American
educators can no longer hide behind our assumptions of what's possible and
what's not. We must create performances of possibility."
