Hello Adam, anna and others
Like adam I am most often an observer of GT. I have been certified since 1981, a product of the wonderful clinical psychodrama training of Dale Richard Buchanan and others at St Elizabeths' hospital where tHere was a year long internship for, I think over 50 years started by Moreno, turned over to Jim Ennis and carried forward by Dale and others like David Swink, Kerry Atlman and Barry Spodak who are no longer active in the ASgPp world.
However, they are some of the most financially successful psychodramatists there are. Like me they have taken psychodrama outside of what I often feel is a closed community and brought it to the world.
Zerka Moreno often says "become a psychodramatist and see the world". That to me is one of the biggest benefits of being a psychodramatist...the worldwide connections.
I have co created The Therapeutic Spiral Model to treat PTSD following much of what Patti has said about Janet's expansion of freudian analysis. I have been invited and worked in over a dozen countries in the past 25 years, including australia, new zealand, canada. England northern ireland, turkey, israel, south korea and for the past 8 Years I have worked exclusively in taiwan and mainland china.
It has been a career I never could have imagined and I have felt blessed every step of the way.
Another story of Zerka's is how when psychodramatists met in the early years, they would recognize each other by throwing their arms up in the psychodrama symbol and embracing each other. I feel it is what we still do today...recognize the heart to heart connection of fellow psychodramatists when we meet no matter where we are around the world.
Have I made a financial living out of this? Yes. Not as much as if I had stayed in practice as a Phd clinical psychologist raking in $125/hr 40 hrs a week. But I do make $1000/day for most of my work even if I only work 100 days a year.
I am just now finishing up a month's donated work in the earthquake zone in china teaching psychologists, doctors, nurses and teachers how to use the therapeutic spiral's intervention the Containing double as well as using TSm to heal the frontline workers. It has been the hardest work of my life.
Out of this comes a TSM recovery center for PTSD that will grow as a partnership between my own business, several universities in the affected areas n the support of a military medical university. I hope it will be both financially and healing successful.
At this center TSM trained staff will teach abt psychodrama and ptsd. Daily staff will provide TSm therapy. And we will also invite other psychodrantists to come and offer their work as well. Ed has agreed to bring Sociatry there. Many want to teach intro to psychodrama and a dear friend of mine. Larry goldstein, also outside of the regular asgpp community will bring playback to the effected area. It is a dream come true and one that I found one step at a time.
I do encourage people to become certified and at one pt when I was working in the states had the most students...outside of St Es, to get certified. I think it is a good process and one I use as the foundation for the certification in trauma therapy using tsm that my organization gives out.
A final moreno quote that drives my work. Moreno to freud at AMA in 1917.
You analyze people's dreams. I give them the courage to dream again.
Thanks for asking the important questions. Kate
