Moreno/Stegreiftheater

 Hans-Peter Korn writes: about spontaneity theatre: Yes, this might be irritating for all persons not being close to the tradition of "Stegreiftheater" which was (and is still a bit) popular in  southern Germany and Austria.  Well, I grew up in Vienna just a few hundred meters away from the "Ottakringer Pawlatschenthater"  which is the nickname for the Stegreiftheater "Tschaunerbühne".

"Stegreif" is an old German word for the horsemans stirrup.  So, "acting in a stegreif-manner" means to act spontaneous "without descending from the hourse".   (see: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stegreif)

So, "Stegreiftheater" is definitively not invented by Moreno.... it is a traditional  kind how to make theatre going back to the time of Shakespeare and Commedia dell'Arte. Moreno used this tradition - maybe in the new context of e.g. a "role play of business situations" (see example described in  http://www.vbkoe.org/i/theater_von_morgen_small.gif). 

It might be a good idea to make some more profound investigations about the situation and traditions of "Stegreiftheater" at the time of Moreno and to evaluate the effective contributions of Moreno in this context.  This could be done best out of a view independent from psychodrama, e.g. by a scientist for dramatics. Warmly,  Hans-Peter

"After the first world war about 30 Stegreiftheater existed in Vienna. 1909 the "Tschaunerbühn" (the only one of them existing up to now) was founded. The most important time of the Viennese Stegreifbühnen  lasted until the begin of the second world war. One of the most popular Stegreif- and puppet-theatres was that of the family Glas.  Grandfather Glas  already acted 1875 on stage  and became very famous as "Shakespeare of Hernals" ((Hernals is an outer district of Vienna)). Ferry Glas, director and actor, joined the "Tschaunerbühn" 1948 and stayed with that stage until his death."

"The "Tschauner Bühn" was founded 1909 like many others as an openair stage not only as a stage for theatre  but  mainly for circus like  productions  (circensic productions). This was the result of a law which stated, that artists in that times are not allowed to show complete theatre productions but short one act plays and sketches only. So,  the founding family Rudolf let act circus artists in the evening productions and showed short one act plays only. The later principal Karoline Tschauner Janousek (1919 - 1991), better knows as 'die Tschaunerin'  acted already in these times as one of the artists."

I think, that Moreno was aware of this "Stegreif-Szene" in Vienna in those times and maybe he also visitied some of those productions... and maybe also some of the "Tschaunerbühn".... and maybe as a "theatre fan" he was inspired by that "Stegreifbühnen" to try it out also himself...

      1) In the paper I read: "At the same time Moreno began to experiment with spontaneous theatre in Maysedergasse, Vienna, where he rented a space. It is well described elsewhere how his original "Stegreiftheater" became the source of the development of sociometry and psychodrama. (Marineau 1989)"
